1) IIM Shillong is no longer viewed as a newly established IIM; it has made significant progress compared to its counterparts. This is reflected in both the caliber of recruiters and placement statistics, which are comparable to institutions like MDI Gurgaon, IIFT, and SIBM Pune. 2) IIM Trichy emerges as the leading new IIM for Finance, featuring high-quality recruiters and a large number of students choosing this specialization. 3) While no new IIM excels exceptionally in Consulting, IIM Udaipur is considered the top campus for consulting due to its specialized opportunities, including firms like EY Parthenon and Bain Capability Network, along with strong recruiters such as Accenture Strategy, Everest Group, and PwC. 4) There are a few outstanding HR programs in the country, but IIM Ranchi’s HR program ranks comfortably among the top five nationwide, supported by a dedicated placement process and quality recruiters. 5) All new IIMs provide very good opportunities in Marketing, with numerous FMCG companies offering excellent career paths. 6) In the fields of Operations, IT, and Analytics, all new IIMs also present solid opportunities.
MBA aspirants often worry about missing out by not enrolling in the "Big 6" IIMs. However, here’s what the second-generation IIMs offer: Comparable to Older IIMs
- Strong peer group: The cutoff percentile for shortlisting is 95%ile, which is quite challenging to achieve. The batch consists of many candidates scoring above the 99th percentile, along with students from prestigious universities such as the University of Delhi, NITs, Xavier’s, and Christ.
- Robust Network: With batch sizes ranging from 350 to 400 students, these institutes provide excellent networking opportunities.
- Academic Rigor & Curriculum: The newer IIMs provide academically demanding programs closely modeled after the older IIMs, featuring updated curricula that align with industry requirements and global business trends.
- Infrastructure & Facilities: These institutes boast modern campuses equipped with advanced lecture halls, hostels, libraries, and technology-enabled learning environments.
- Industry Engagement: The newer IIMs maintain strong industry connections that support summer internships and live projects comparable to those at older IIMs. They regularly organize corporate events, guest lectures, and industry mentorship programs to ensure continuous exposure.
Where Differences Arise? Alumni Network: Having been established for about 15 years, the newer IIMs have developed a solid alumni base. However, it is not as extensive as that of the older IIMs, which have decades of alumni holding CXO positions worldwide. The success of alumni placements significantly influences an institution’s standing among top colleges. Elite Job Profiles: Certain roles, such as front-end Investment Banking, front-end Consulting with firms like BCG, Kearney, McKinsey, Bain, and leadership programs offered by major conglomerates like Tata Administrative Services and Aditya Birla Leadership Program, are typically exclusive to select colleges. Specializations: Data shows that, except for Shillong, most newer IIMs place 1/3rd of their students in marketing roles within the FMCG and BFSI sectors. This contrasts with older IIMs, where 33-45% students choose consulting, followed by finance at around 20-25%.
Quality of Recruiters: Although the gap has narrowed compared to the past, some differences remain. For instance, in marketing, top FMCG companies like Mondelez, Reckitt, HUL, P&G, ITC, L'Oréal, Marico, Coca-Cola, Pepsi, and Nestlé regularly recruit from older IIMs, but these names rarely appear in the placement reports of newer IIMs. In summary, there are fewer opportunities to secure positions with major brands at the newer IIMs. Please note that this is a relative comparison, not an absolute one. For example, if 50 students from older IIMs are securing placements with major brands, the corresponding number for newer IIMs would be approximately 25. The Future: Success Awaits the Ambitious For driven candidates, here’s the key point: Excel at a second-generation IIM, and outstanding results are assured: - The highest 25% of students regularly receive salary offers above ₹25 lakh, which is nearly equivalent to the average salary package of several established IIMs.
- Ultimately, the IIM brand helps you get off to a strong start. From there, your talent, determination, and effort shape your ultimate success.
In conclusion, second-generation IIMs are no longer considered a “second option.” Their rapid progress, recruiter confidence, and student achievements demonstrate that it’s the beginning, not the label, that matters. For those who are passionate, committed, and ambitious, gaining admission to IIM Shillong, Udaipur, Trichy, Ranchi, Raipur, or Rohtak serves as a springboard to leadership and meaningful impact.
